Anyone who has ever travelled abroad has experienced culture shock. Culture shock can make you feel nostalgic, depressed and irritated. It is the counterpart to the initial euphoria you experience when you visit a new place - things tend to start going downhill when you realise that people in this new place are just as strange as the people back home.

    Blimey, That's Weird!

It's natural to experience culture shock and it has nothing to do with where you are. That said, there's no denying that some extremely weird things go on in countries around the world. Many of these strange things escape the eye of the casual observer. Only those spending more time in these places, learning languages or working, can discover the bizarre cultural habits that lurk beneath the surface.

    • Roughly 80,000 umbrellas are lost every year on the London Underground. This either indicates a distaste for private property or a fascination with brollies. So, watch out for vanishing umbrellas if you plan to attend an English language school in London.
    • There are more than 30,000 John Smiths in Britain. Either creativity is at a low or it's all part of a secret plot by MI5.
    • While taking a class at the (alleged) best language school London has to offer, I found out that nowhere in Britain is more than 74½ miles from the sea. Perhaps that explains the British obsession with fish and chips.

    • According to the Durex Global Sex Survey, Greece is the most sexually active country in the whole world. Greeks apparently have sex an average of 138 times per year.
    • Maybe it's their sleeping habits that explain why Greece has the highest smoking rates in Europe.
    • In times gone by, Olympic athletes competed naked... a pattern seems to be emerging here.
    • Greece owns the largest maritime fleet in the whole world. That might not seem terrifying now, but think of thousands upon thousands of naked and sexually aroused Greeks disembarking on the shores of your homeland and we will see if you don't feel scared.
